This is very frustrating. Every time I order a nice pint of bitter in my pub down the road, I also have to order a mop.
Many thanks to Brian for this one.

No way. I simply can't. Drawing a duck. I'm too stupid. I can't draw a duck. All my ducks look like insects or crocodiles. Why can I not draw ducks? There must be something wrong with me. Anybody can draw ducks, except me. I can't draw ducks.

The DDR commissioned two photographs [sic], Gunter Rubitzsh and Staube (he/she only used the one name), hired St Pauli Girl models, chose the locations that most inspired them - oil factories, worker canteens, concrete office blocks - and set about creating their own unique and daring style.

Oh, those were the days when they could actually sell their stupid cars because of the added bonus of 'parallel working screenwipers'. Everything was much easier in 1966. The car looks great though and the copywriter surely was a genius:... Und bei rotem Licht steht er, ohne sich vor der Ampel zu verbeugen. Apart from that, there was obviously no art director involved; the whole design must have been done by a typesetter, who was not very good at typesetting whatsoever. Just look at the hyphenation. The ridiculous linespacing of the headline! Pure madness. But that's what makes it good.

You may or may not know that I once wrote and illustrated a book. In fact, it is a novel, although nowadays you may want to call it a Graphic Novel; however, I'm still tempted to refer to it as a 'proper' novel. Just because it's illustrated doesn't automatically make it a Comic Book, does it? The book's title is Antarktis Expedition 1931/32. Das Tagebuch des Peter Ludwig Fall. A few sample pages can be found here.It was published in October 1986 by Greno Publishing Company, hardbound, came in a black slipcase and is long out of print; this was an edition of only 999 numbered copies. In case you're interested in the book, try your luck at ZVAB or eBay. Just key 'Zeigermann' into the search engine mask and Bob's your Uncle. Because even a graphic novel doesn't write itself over a weekend, I thought it might be interesting for my regular readers or anyone just passing by to see the actual research that went into the book. As a matter of fact, it took me a year getting all the materials together and another year writing and drawing the damn thing. Greno paid me all in all 6000 German Marks for the book, which isn't a lot for 2 years' of hard work. But hey - it's a really nice book and even after all these years I can still brag about it, which is the main thing. See my Flickr Set with typescript variations, newspaper clippings and other stuff here. You may or may not be interested at all. Thank you for your attention.

I actually used to live there. From February 1994 in No. 9, Elm Street (and the name of that road alone has a weirdness factor of +10 at least) until the end of '95, then I moved into a house in Richmond Road. My mate Dave is from Cambridge, and Dave used to play bass in David Gilmour's band Joker's Wild back in the 60s. While crossing a road in central Cambridge, I fell over Stephen Hawking and his wheelchair. I was looking in the other direction and didn't notice the wheelchair and his nurse. Stephen Hawking apologised, although it was all my fault. Monty Python are from Cambridge too. Walking across Jesus Green one night, I saw a triangular flying object in the skies, glowing brightly. This turned out to be three RAF jets flying in a triangular formation. How disappointing. The best pub in the Universe was the Cow & Calf on Castle Hill, whose landlord commited suicide. I used to work for Cambridge University Press, designing schoolbooks. A very small pub is located in King Street: the St. Radegund, which is no bigger than my living room. The King Street Run is still very popular. While walking through a Cambridge Park, I happened to be in the way of Stephen Hawking and his nurse. Again. I nodded in recognition, saying "Good afternoon, Professor" and stepped aside. The robotic voice answered "*&%£@o". I once spotted Syd Barrett on Parkers Piece and he was fat and bald. And I didn't kiss the lawn he walked on. Although I should have done. Cambridge is the magnetic pole for everything weird. And nothing beats falling over Stephen Hawking's wheelchair. The survivors. A fabulous coffin* animation. The days before PowerPoint. Jim Coudal is going to like this, I'm sure. Thanks to Axel for letting me know.*The 'Coffin' ('Sarg' in Brockendootsch) was a GGK invention. A black box used to carry your boards to the client, it also doubled up as a nifty presentation device: all you had to do was to flip over the boards (with all your wonderful ideas on them) one by one towards the client. Simple, but ingenious.
