The panoramic map was a popular cartographic form used to depict U.S. and Canadian cities and towns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Known also as bird's-eye views, perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are nonphotographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective.

Alexander Goodall was born in Mortlake, in Victoria's Western District, on 19 December 1874. He signed his letters 'Alex' and his family called him 'Aleck'. When he left school in 1888, he got a job as a clerk with the Post and Telegraph Office. His lungs began to trouble him and he decided to move to a warmer climate. In 1890, he left Mortlake for Rochester. Alex began to keep a diary at the age of 17. Four volumes have survived ... The diaries for 1895, 1896 and 1897 are much more richly illustrated. Diary keeping was very important to him.

Kiowa Drawings. Fabulous. The Smithsonian's collections of Kiowa drawings include works of art on buffalo hide and more recent examples on paper, a medium that Kiowa artists adopted after it became widely available in the late nineteenth century. Together, these drawings offer a unique source of information on tribal social and artistic traditions.

What excuse can there be for these ridiculous monstrosities in the cloister where the monks do their reading, extraordinary things at once beautiful and ugly? . . . a beast with a serpent for its tail, a fish with an animal's head, and a creature that is horse in front and goat behind, and a second beast with horns and the rear of a horse. . . .

Dirty Socks. This might be a bit difficult to understand, but the Bishop refers to a comment (no permalinks there, it's entry 67) on Rulf Neigenfind's website. All German language, I'm afraid. Or should I say: all German?

Those Gorey Covers! He's always good for a link. But then he's always better than just that. Here are the Gorey Paperback Covers. And they're all great. Fab. Fantastic. As art editor, Gorey was responsible for the total cover package, supplying the lettering, typography and design layouts. Often other artist contributed the actual illustration: Leonard Baskin, Milton Glaser, Philippe Julian and even Andy Warhol; but Gorey then designed the finished product lending a uniform appearance to the whole line. Yeah, well - that's exactly what 'designers/art directors' usually do. That's our job.

By the Way. Horst wrote about this already (direct link to entry), but I just have to post a follow-up on that. In order to get my Super Jewel Boxes up and running, I had to buy some new ink cartridges for my rather antique Epson Stylus 740. On Tottenham Court Road, of course. After paying the extraordinary amount of 52 quid, I noticed they were selling printers off their shelves from as low as £32! Next time I'll just buy a new printer. This is getting ridiculous.

You are all pretentious twats Every last one of you. You're all latte-sipping, iMac-using, suburban-living tertiary-industry-working WASPs who offer absolutely no new insights on anything whatsoever apart from maybe one specialist field if we're lucky. Most of you think that you're writing original content and that you're making a contribution by licensing your spewings under Creative Commons "Some Rights Reserved" licences, just because it's the hip thing to do. You think you know all there is to say about blogging because you understand the concept of HTML and CSS, but the horrible truth is that 40% of you are all using the same shitty default layout. Then you take pictures of yourselves looking pensive or making vague allusions to mythology...

Derelict London is an unusual photographic portrait (of over 300 pics) of the nations capital. This is not a compilation of familiar tourist sights, as another of those is hardly needed, but a depiction of an (often un-picturesque) view of everyday life in London.

It's a Jewel. I've just received a batch of Super Jewel Cases, thanks to Coudal Partners. All I can say is: they are fabulous. They are fantastic. They are awesome. The templates and the perforated inserts are incredible. My design needs a bit of tweaking, but I'll sort that out tomorrow. Presentation is everything. And then I'll flood the ad agencies of London with my stuff. And hopefully get a proper job. Fab. (this fab404 via Schockwellenreiter, via contentschmiede.)
