"U.S. military spending ($343 billion in the year 2000) is 69 percent greater than that of the next five highest nations combined. Russia, which has the second largest military budget, spends less than one-sixth what the United States does. Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan, Iran, and Syria spend $14.4 billion combined; Iran accounts for 52 percent of this total."

More old London pics are here; unfortunately the enlargements of the thumbs come with an ugly red watermark and I am much too lazy to retouch that. But then the photos are much better than those at the 'Images' site.

And at GenDocs you will find lots of information about London Churches; Victorian Lodging Houses; London Metropolitan Police Divisions; Victorian London Inns, Taverns & Public Houses; and much, much more. Sadly, no pictures. Damn.

A picture named proteusF.jpgFamily matters. Paul Joyce is indeed the great grandnephew of James Joyce and like him he was born in Dublin. Not only that, he's also an artist and has produced 18 etchings and oil paintings illustrating the book. That book. The one and only Ulysses.

"My visual exploration of Joyce's masterpiece has culminated in these eighteen etchings. Pivotal scenes from each chapter of Ulysses are shown, with as much attention to the details of the book as possible," explains Joyce. Each etching displays a different visual style -- such as abstract, realist and cubist -- and corresponds to the literal style used in the book."

A picture named robot.gifBack for a week. Be well prepared for daily entries. I'm a whole week back at home in London. And here's a very funny Irish joke I found at Zoe's My boyfriend is a twat:

Saddam Hussein was sitting in his office wondering whom to invade next when his telephone rang.

"Hello! Mr. Hussein," a heavily-accented voice said. "This is Paddy down in the Harp pub in County Sligo, Ireland. I am ringing to inform you that we are officially declaring war on you."

"Well, Paddy," Saddam replied, "This is indeed important news! How big is your army?"

"Right now," said Paddy, after a moment's calculation, "there is meself, me cousin Sean, me next door neighbour Seamus, and the entire dart team from the pub. That makes eight!"

Saddam paused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have one million men in my army, waiting to move on my command."

"Begorra!" said Paddy. "I'll have to ring you back!"

Sure enough, the next day, Paddy called again. "Mr. Hussein, the war is still on! We have managed to acquire some equipment!"

"And what equipment would that be, Paddy?" Saddam asked.

"Well, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Murphy's old farm tractor."

Saddam sighed. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 6,000 tanks and 4,000 armoured personnel carriers. I've increased my army to 1.5 million since we last spoke."

"Saints preserve us!" said Paddy. "I'll have to get back to you."

Sure enough, Paddy rang again the next day. "Mr. Hussein, the war is still on! We have managed to get ourselves airborne! We've modified Harrigan's ultra-light with a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four boys from the Shamrock pub have joined us as well!"

Saddam was silent for a minute and then cleared his throat. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 1,000 bombers and 2,000 fighter planes. My military complex is surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites, and since we last spoke, I've increased my army to TWO MILLION!"

"Jezus, Mary and Joseph!" said Paddy. "I'll have to ring you back."

Sure enough Paddy called again the next day. "Top o' the mornin', Mr.Hussein! I am sorry to tell you that we have had to call off the war."

"I'm intrigued," said Saddam. "Why the sudden change of heart?"

"Well," said Paddy, "we've all had a long chat over a few pints, and there's no way we can feed two million prisoners."

 The War Dance. Killing Joke.

The atmosphere's strange
Out on the town
Music for pleasure
It's not music no more
Music to dance to
Music to move
This is music to march to
To a war dance

A war dance

Look at the victim
Scrawled on the wall
You know the reason
Outside the door
You got something
Nasty in your mind
Trying to get out
To a war dance

A war dance

We walk round the pitch
Honesty is sick
Try to be honest
Look what you get
The food runs short
And then the money talks
One way out
Look for a nationist command

A war dance

A picture named railw.jpgHere comes the train. A really nice exhibition of old British Railway Posters. Great stuff.

"It is hardly surprising that the "Golden Age" of British railway posters coincided with the quarter-century following the amalgamation in 1923 of almost all of the numerous small independent companies into what came to be known as the "Big Four"railways: the Great Western (GWR); the London, Midland, and Scottish (LMS); the London and North East (LNER); and the Southern (SR). The end of the Great War saw Britain with a public eager to travel - and possessing a well-developed taste for the poster as a medium of advertising. In the latter case the war itself provided continuity for initiatives that began in peacetime, for the recruiting and saving and funding campaigns needed to vanquish the Hun were waged largely on the hoardings.

Now how on Earth is she going to see someone in Aberystwyth when that person is apparently standing on the platform somewhere at King's Cross ? The guy hasn't even got onto the train yet! Perhaps some old-fashioned 'beaming device'? Who knows.

There's a comprehensive Swiss website about his machine, along with a JAVA 'Analytical Engine Emulator'; and of course the exhibit at London's Science Museum.

"Charles Babbage (1791-1871) is widely regarded as the first computer pioneer and the great ancestral figure in the history of computing. Babbage excelled in a variety of scientific and philosophical subjects though his present-day reputation rests largely on the invention and design of his vast mechanical calculating engines. His Analytical Engine conceived in 1834 is one of the startling intellectual feats of the nineteenth century. The design of this machine possesses all the essential logical features of the modern general purpose computer. "

"robot3"What about the Liberal Democrats then? Any party at all on the right track over here? IDS sets out his moral case for war. The Tory leader will address his party's spring conference on why he backs prime minister Tony Blair in going to war to disarm Iraq. [BBC News | Front Page | UK Edition]

A picture named skull.jpgSkulls. Because CNN is going to present similar stuff fresh from Iraq in the near future, here's a link to a skull exhibition at the California Academy of Sciences. And the skulls there are really old skulls.

A picture named robot2.gifSadly, it won't help. But at least there's something happening in the US. Anti-war protesters gather in Washington. WASHINGTON - As anti-war protesters began gathering for today's march around the White House and other demonstrations around the globe, dozens of former members of Congress urged the Bush administration to give weapons inspectors more time before taking military action against Iraq.  A picture named Paris1937-8.jpgTravel Ephemera. I'm having a problem with this website. On one hand, you will find the most beautiful travel-related graphic design there (travel brochures, ads, luggage labels...), on the other hand, if you follow the author's Truth Victorious link, you will find the most disturbing anti-Arabic, anti-France and anti-UN right wing links there. Up to my readers to decide. Found via xq.

A picture named shit.gifFreedom of Speech [2]. Freedom of speech? Democracy? We don't need this crap. NYPress - Cage Match

"Abandoning the time-honored pretense of spontaneity, Bush chose the order of questioners not by scanning the room and picking out raised hands, but by looking down and reading from a predetermined list. Reporters, nonetheless, raised their hands in between questions- as though hoping to suddenly catch the president's attention.

In other words, not only were reporters going out of their way to make sure their softballs were pre-approved, but they even went so far as to act on Bush's behalf, raising their hands and jockeying in their seats in order to better give the appearance of a spontaneous news conference. "koewi"

A picture named victorian.jpgOld ads, continued [2]. It cured me! Have a look at the Victorian Tradecards exhibit at Miami University Libraries.

The Miami University Libraries contain several thousand advertising trade cards. Trade Cards were typically used to advertise products and services including such items as patent medicines, thread, sewing machines, food and beverages, farm equipment and others. Trade cards reached the height of their popularity during the 1880's and 1890's. Reduced postal rates and the rise of magazine publishing led to the eventual decline in popularity of this unique American form of advertising.

A picture named 820.jpgOld ads, continued. AdFlip is 'the worlds largest archive of classic print ads'. Brilliant. The ad on the left is from the famous Volkswagen campaign by DDB. Doesn't work with Safari for some reason.
