Another german blogging fellow living in this rather weird country! Fabulous. Especially because he mentions Dortmund, and I was raised there, until I pissed off to Hamburg...and then England of course. www.grewe.co.uk, Armin Grewe's personal homepage: "[A new haircut?]
No, not for me. And not for David Beckham either. But apparently David Seaman cut his hair. Will this move bring back his goalkeeping powers? When writing this Arsenal lead 1-0 against Dortmund in the Champions League..."

Oh, I love this country... Liverpool's "Winchester Mystery" tunnels. Liverpudlians have begun to excavate the tunnels of Joseph Williamson, a local 19th-Cen tycoon who hired thousands of men to honeycomb the city with labyrnthine tunnels that dead-end, circle back and stack atop one another (think of a subterranian Winchester Mystery House). It's unclear whether he did this because he was nuts, or because he wanted to give the laboring classes "productive" labor, or because he was remotely controlled by the Mole People (my pet theory).
"We still don't know where each one leads, and we are finding new tunnels all the time," she says.
"There is a triple-decker tunnel under the carpark here and a completely different section has just been found up the road."
Back within the barrel-shaped chamber, the tunnel twists, turns, narrows and changes level.
Smaller tunnels and chimneys head off into the darkness.
Mapping the maze has not been easy. Williamson was notoriously secretive about his creation and no contemporary plan of the whole network survives.

The Unsuspecting Tourist found out about our much loved and hated British Rail:
Autumn Trains
I heard on the BBC today that trains in parts of the country were not running because there were too many leaves on parts of the tracks. They were talking about the paper thin leaves that fall on the ground right?
Is there an official leave counter on the government payroll?
"You'll need to call off the trains Jonathan, we've exceeded the maximum amount of autumn foliage on the tracks".

And another one! The Penny Magazine of the Society for the diffusion of Useful Knowledge: "This page represents an effort, begun by Laurie Dickinson and Sarah Wadsworth as part of the graduate seminar English 8330: Illustrated Periodicals (Fall 1995) at the University of Minnesota. Our purpose is to make available electronically some of the key issues of the Penny Magazine of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, a popular illustrated weekly of mid-nineteenth century Britain. The publications from the first volume include the full texts of the Preface to that Volume and the text and images from the very first issue of the periodical. The publications from the second volume are of four issues in which the Penny Magazine itself is used as an exemplar to demonstrate the history and technologies of commercial publishing. These four issues are presented in full-page graphical image format and as illustrated annotated texts. In addition, we will be making available bibliographic information and critical essays which pertain to this series."

The Penny Magazine is simply fantastic. The german edition (Greno 1985) is long out of print; here is the original and, best of all, it's online. Fabulous. The Penny Magazine, published every Saturday, was aimed at the working class. It was part of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge's program for liberal reform. for its reader, however, it was a source of information on subjects of general interest: everyday things like tea and coffee, well-known places in England, a series on animals and birds of Britain, descriptions of prsent-day manufacturing, even an American alaman and a serial of a personal account of an immigrant's problems. Poetry was published, too, and there are several illustrations in each issue. Penny Magazine Online Home Page

Fabulous article about typography: max bruinsma > texts > miscellaneous > the erotics of type: "The erotics of type
From the simple figure 69, to elaborate tongue-in-cheek exercises like Michael Worthington's 'Dominatrix' typeface, typographers and type designers as well as readers (and censors) have used letters and ciphers to suggest 'prurient' content. Throughout the history of typography, the 'abstract' medium of type is employed to evoke eroticism, not by merely using the obvious words, but by using the letterforms: Copulating letters, erotic ligatures and the dot.
